Purpose and Need

The purpose of the LGA Access Improvement Project (Proposed Action) is to provide a reliable, time-certain transportation option that connects passengers and employees to LGA as well as provides adequate parking for Airport employees.

Currently, LGA is accessible only by road. Passengers and employees face increasing and unreliable travel times and traffic congestion on off-Airport roadways. Specifically, the Proposed Action is needed to address:

  • Increasing and unreliable travel times to/from key locations within New York City;

  • Limited transportation options to the Airport;

  • Traffic congestion on off-Airport roadways near the Airport which contributes to Airport access travel times; and

  • Limited on-Airport options to provide adequate employee parking and room to conduct maintenance activities.

A preliminary Purpose and Need statement for the project has been developed and can be downloaded here.
